HOW IT ALL BEGAN
An inspiring story of one man’s diagnosis with Multiple Sclerosis at age 47, and his struggle to rise from the depths of despair to the stage of a bodybuilding contest.
When David Lyons lay in his hospital bed numb from the chest down, barely able to move and just diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, little did he know the journey God was about to take him on. He had two choices: give into the disease and most likely end up in a wheelchair, or fight it with all his might like David did against Goliath in the Bible. David Lyons, like his namesake, chose the battle.
In this gripping book, you will see how he battles this debilitating, unpredictable, and often misunderstood disease in what he calls ”The MS Bodybuilding Challenge.”
David Lyons has written a powerful and moving memoir about his life and his struggles with MS. It’s raw, honest, and well-written. He doesn’t hold anything back.

I have had MS for a decade and I can say emphatically that movement, stretching and exercise are imperative to surviving all that this crazy disease has to dole out. I have had my period of being in shape and physically active with this disease and my window of being a bump on a log (or rather my couch) thanks to chronic pain that set in. From that, I have learned it is SO much better to KEEP MOVING and David knows that first hand and he has done a great job of putting into a book, exercises that are geared towards helping maximize one’s abilities and limit disabilities by getting or staying strong.
I have two sons that are competitive powerlifters – one is competing at nationals this fall and the other is studying kinesiology and prides himself in his knowledge of the body and strength training. I was curious what they would think of the book and the information it provides, so I asked them to give it a read and both came back with the response that it was well written, contained good exercises and was easy to understand (not in those EXACT words, but that was the gist of it.) So if I can do the exercises and my “stronger than they should be” sons approve of them, then I consider it a huge win.
If you have MS – or another disease that compromises your mobility and/or balance and you have thought about trying to gain some strength back or you are looking to change it up and find new exercises, I would recommend this book. It provides clear instructions on how to get stronger and that is the number one way to fight this crazy disease – by being stronger than it.
